The haggadah implies that in each era we must work toward liberating new groups of people for we cannot be truly free until all are free.
One way to enrich your family's seder is to select an oppressed group of people and then make a commitment during the seder to help liberate them. Discuss what can be done during the seder. Then don’t wait. Begin the process as soon as possible.
Focus on stopping the genocide in Darfur
Your family and friends can learn about the genocide in Darfur and what steps they can take to stop it. Educate yourselves and others. Then write to your representatives, donate money, or go to a protest. Learn more.
Stop World Hunger
Hunger is a form of enslavement, especially when it emerges from poverty. MAZON, a Jewish response to hunger, is an organization that distributes money to various hunger advocacy groups and direct service providers, educates the Jewish community about hunger, and encourages the Jewish community to donate 3% of the cost of their lifecycle events to fight hunger.
Learn about its work and what you can do to stop hunger. Then donate canned goods or time to a local food kitchen or pantry.
You and your family may enjoy chocolate--but did you know much of the world's supply of cacao beans, from which chocolate is made, is harvested by slaves in Africa? You may want to read more about this problem.
We were once slaves in Egypt, and Gd redeemed us. Now we can learn how to free others. It makes our freedom all the more sweeter.
