PURIM AND TZEDAKAH

Purim is a day of taking pleasure but it's also a day of giving pleasure and doing good. We perform tzedakah by donating food or money to at least two poor people, and we practice Mishloah Manot or the "sending of gifts" by bringing a basket of fruit or plate of sweet treats to at least one friend. The custom is mentioned in the book of Esther "make them days of feasting and joy, of sending portions to one another." The silliness associated with Purim is thus countered by the requirement to thanks those that we might not usually thank and assist those in our communities that need help the most.
