Who's Who in Outreach : Barbara Chaiken
I have been part of the JOI team since the November 1996
General Assembly of Federations in Seattle. I led one
of the outreach discussions at the JOI outreach seminar
preceding the GA. The group was comprised of outreach
professionals from communities all over North America.
In addition to outreach training and consultation,
my work at JOI includes responding to letters written
to our Web site by some of our many daily users. I am
also planning to be part of a JOI sponsored "chat room"
on the World Wide Web, which would enable participants
to call in and talk with a professional specializing
in interfaith relationships.
As a clinical social worker, I have been leading outreach
support groups for interfaith couples and parents since
creating and serving as the director of the first Jewish
Family Service agency in Greensboro, NC in 1991. At
the time, I was simply responding to requests from interfaith
couples for more outreach. Since leaving the agency
at the end of the last year, I have been able to devote
all of my energies into creating new projects for JOI.
Currently, I am in the process of completing a manual
directed at professionals working with interfaith couples
and parents of interfaith families. The manual was jointly
commissioned by JOI and B'nai B'rith as part of a larger
outreach training program which will be offered to communities
around the country.
Recently I was filmed facilitating a discussion group
comprised of engaged and married interfaith couples.
The film highlights many key issues and concerns about
which these couples must struggle. We hope communities
will be interested in using the manual, the film, and
our expertise to fine tune existing outreach programs
and/or create innovative programming for families affected
by interfaith marraiges.
