Who's Who in Outreach : Eve Coulson

Eve Coulson Six years ago, I was asked to form an outreach committee at the Jewish Center, a traditional egalitarian synagogue in Princeton, New Jersey. I started with a colleague and we gathered a total of eight people, each of whom had different interfaith backgrounds. Their perspectives informed the programs that we developed for that and subsequent years.

Some of the programs and projects we have created include: Sukkah building parties; discussions regarding Hebrew school for the benefit of parents who had never attended, or for women who had never experienced a Bat Mitzvah. I have created a tradition of meetings prior to the high holidays where congregants can get to know the rabbi, ask basic questions about the holy time which has no counterpart in the Christian calendar, and ascend to the bima to view the Torah up close. Our most popular event is our seminnual potluck shabbat dinner that closely resembles a large noisy extended family gathering. In all, my hope is that what we do enables people to feel included and involved in the Jewish community.

Through my efforts I have earned credibility within the community on the issue of intermarriage and have spoken at a number of functions. I have found that what I do touches lives.

This past year I have joined forces with Egon Mayer and JOI as project manager of the Professional Outreach Training Programs. Simultaneously working in my local community, and JOI gives me a wonderful perspective in both arenas.
